The age I started learning how business really works.

Where it started

It started behind the counter of my Dad's video shop.

My journey started at 15, working in my Dad's video rental shop - back in the days before Netflix. It was there I learnt the fundamentals of business: how to promote, upsell, encourage repeat business and use technology to make things work better.

And I've done it every day since. Over the last 20+ years I've taken those same principles from a small shop in my hometown to helping businesses and brands across the UK and internationally.

Understand what people want. Find better ways of reaching them. Make it easier for them to buy. Then build the systems and technology to make it work better.

That is where marketing, sales and technology come together. An eye for good design, an understanding of online persuasion and sales, strategic thinking, and technology, automation and AI to bring it all together. That's it. That's the magic.

What shaped how I work

Not your typical marketing CV.

Every room teaches you something about people. These are the ones that taught me most.

i.

Behind the counter

My Dad's video shop taught me promotion, upselling and repeat business before I knew the words for them.

ii.

Behind the decks

DJing and running club nights. You learn fast what fills a room, and what empties it.

iii.

On the mic

Stand-up comedy. Nothing teaches you to get to the point, and read an audience, quite like a quiet room.

iv.

In the lecture room

Teaching web design at university. In every class, a handful of students said they understood it, but wanted to pay me to do it for them.

v.

In the boardroom

Two years as Marketing Director at EPIC Hospitality, seeing the job from the client's side of the table.

How I think

Three disciplines. One commercial job.

Most marketing problems aren't contained in one channel. A business may need a clearer message, a better website and faster follow-up, all at once. The answer works best when those pieces are designed together.

Marketing
Get the right message in front of the right people.
Sales
Make trust, choice and the next step easier.
Technology
Connect the data, follow-up and day-to-day work.

Principles

Four rules I've never stopped using.

I.Understand what people want.Good marketing starts with what matters to the buyer, not what the business wants to say.
II.Find better ways of reaching them. The right message in the right place beats more noise in more places.
III.Make it easier for them to buy.Clear offers, simple journeys and fewer reasons to hesitate.
IV.Build the systems that make it work better.Technology, automation and AI, so nothing slips and good work scales.

A good fit

Who I do my best work with.

  • You want ownership, not more suppliers.Someone needs to see the whole picture and keep the work moving.
  • You value direct, experienced input.Useful advice and practical action, not layers of presentation.
  • You're willing to change how things work. The answer may involve the message, the customer journey or the systems behind it.
  • You care about quality and commercial results. The work should look good, and have a clear reason to exist.
